Traditional Thangka Painting workshops

Manjushri - the Embodiment of Ultimate Wisdom

A Workshop on Traditional Tibetan Art with Carmen Mensink

10th -12th October - Venice

Throughout the weekend, you will learn how to draw Manjushri (Jampel -Yang in Tibetan language) according to Thangkas, the traditional Buddhist paintings on rolled up textile. The drawing sessions will be accompanied by detailed theoretical explanations and meditations on the topic. The practice of drawing and painting Thangkas, in addition to its high artistic value, is in fact itself a form of meditation, helping to develop a peaceful and joyful inner space. This course is suitable for beginners as well as professional artists.

Manjushri embodies the enlightened wisdom of the Buddhas.
The implements held by Manjushri are therefore an expression of this enlightened wisdom.
In his left hand holds a lotus flower that holds the 'Sutra of the Perfection of Wisdom', an important Mahayana text which reveals the methods to develop and achieve the highest wisdom within us.
In his right hand he holds a flaming sword, which symbolizes the power of his wisdom to cut off all dualistic illusions and appearances. Because of ignorance, fear and attachment, sentient beings  experience continue suffering: the study of Wisdom Sutra and meditating on Manjushri are the most powerful ways to develop wisdom within us and to overcome obstacles and disappointments.

This week-end course is suitable for beginners and proficient, it is not necessary to have previous experience of drawing or painting! The course will be in English and Italian translation will be availble if needed.
