The Shang Shung Institute in Italy

The objective of the International Shang Shung Institute for Tibetan Studies is to promote all initiatives that function to spread and deepen knowledge of Tibetan culture, in order to ensure its survival.

The Institute organizes courses, study seminars, lectures, exhibitions and publications; it is an active multi-media documentation center on Tibetan culture; offers scholarships to young Tibetans, promoting research and exchanges between Tibet and Western countries.

The Institute was founded in 1989 by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche, former professor of Tibetan language and literature at the Institute for Oriental Studies, Naples University. It is a cultural, non-profit association without political aims.

The Institute’s main seat is in Arcidosso, Italy (Province of Grosseto in Tuscany). Other branches are in Austria and in the United States.

Over the years the Institute has carried out a series of initiatives, collaborating with a variety of Universities, Foundations and Museums in various parts of the world. These were due, in part, to the support of UNESCO, the European Parliament, the Italian Foreign Office and the region of Tuscany.

L'ISTITUTO SHANG SHUNG in Italia

L'Istituto Internazionale di Studi Tibetani Shang Shung promuove tutte quelle iniziative utili a diffondere e ad approfondire la conoscenza della cultura tibetana, al fine di salvaguardarla.

Organizza corsi, seminari di studio, conferenze, mostre e pubblicazioni; è attivo come centro di documentazione multimediale sulla civiltà Tibetana; promuove inoltre attività di ricerca e scambi culturali tra il Tibet e i paesi occidentali.

L'Istituto Internazionale Shang-Shung è stato fondato nel 1989 dal Prof. Namkhai Norbu, già docente di Lingua e Letteratura Tibetana e Mongola presso l'Istituto Universitario Orientale di Napoli. È un ente culturale senza scopi politici o di lucro.

La sede principale è in Italia, ad Arcidosso. Esistono altre sue sedi, una in Massachusetts, negli Stati Uniti e una in Austria. Nei suoi primi dieci anni di attività l'Istituto Shang Shung ha avviato progetti in collaborazione con Università, Fondazioni e Musei in diverse parti del mondo, ricevendo il patrocinio dell'UNESCO, del Parlamento Europeo, del Ministero degli Esteri Italiano e della Regione Toscana.
